Northern Lights – cycle to lapland update
Message from Karen Jones, Chairperson, Northern Lights:
“The weekend was a great success, we raised in excess of £3,500 and far exceeded the mileage, completing a massive 3,033 miles over the three days.
A big thank you goes to all the 111 riders who took part in the event, those who rode on turbo trainers on their own bikes as well as those who took a turn on the exercise bike. Thanks go to the riders from the local cycling clubs including Birkenhead North End, Port Sunlight Wheelers, Chester Go, PaleFish, Merseyside Triathlon, Chester Triathlon and riders from the Bike Factory as well as many other riders who volunteered their time to ensure we reached “Lapland”. In fact we managed to ride a massive 3,033 miles over the weekend. Special thanks go to Beth Maggs who rode an amazing 110 miles on the Sunday and Graeme Cummings who rode 102 miles on the Friday and to Gareth Powell who totaled 62 miles and Eric Blakemore who totaled 43 miles both on the exercise bike. An amazing effort by all our riders. Thanks also go to all the volunteers who gave their time to collect money in buckets during a very cold November weekend.

Jess Wilkinson and NorthWest team win girls Inter Area CycloCross championships
Reports courtesy of Jess Wilkinson
Saturday 10th November – Otterspool Park – 8th round of NorthWest league
It was quite a short but technical course with some slippy sections and short sharp hills. I was battleing with 2 boys again and after a small mistake on the second to last lap I was down in 7th place. The boy in front dropped his chain soon after and so it was really a race to the line from us two! There was a small set of hurdles before a final corner and I decided to sprint the last part with my bike on my shoulder after the hurdles, but after he’d jumped onto his bike again he just pipped to the line adn I finished in 7th overall and first girl.
Sunday 11th November – Milton Keynes – Inter Area CycloCross championships
I was representing North West in a team of 4. Each region put forward several boys teams and mainly one girls team, so there were a lot of riders there! We had won the year before and wanted to defend out title, but Wales and a few other teams looked particularly strong! The course was very hilly again as its set around a “bowl” and there were lots of steep off-camber sections which got greasier throughout! The boy and girls raced together and there were about 100 riders on the line! The first lap was very difficult with all the boys trying to beat the girls, but we all settles into the race quite quickly! For the majority of the race I was in 3rd girl position with 2nd not far ahead and after a few laps the long hills and several running sections played to my advanatage I caught her on the second to last lap. Our team then had me in 2nd, Martha Gill in 4th and Henrietta Colbourne in the top 10 as well as our 4th ride in a comfortable position a bit further down. I also beat the welsh team and our other riders also beat most of them too, so we defended our title as the Inter Area Champions!
Win for Jess Wilkinson at St. Helens CRC cyclocross
St. Helens CRC ran the 7th race in the North West cyclocross series on Saturday 3rd November. In tough muddy conditions, Jess Wilkinson was 1st under 16 girl (5th overall in the junior race) and Craig Rogers was 10th overall in the junior race. Martin Rogers was also 3rd overall in the 50+ age category. Clive Wilkinson also competed but broke his rear mech on the last lap – despite this he still finished by running the remainder of the course. Full results can be found by clicking here.
After the event, Jess travelled to Ipwich for the second round of the National Trophy cyclocross on Sunday 4th November. The course was very muddy after a round of the European cross the day before. Further rain on the Sunday meant by the time that Jess raced the course was like a mudbath! Jess was racing for 3rd place with another girl. Unfortunately on the second to last lap Jess fell off on a very technical off-camber corner so had to settle for 4th place. Full results can be found by clicking here.

Rob Rogers 2nd in the U16 s at the Great Orme Road Race
The Great Orme Road Race organised by the Rhos-on-Sea Cycling club was held on the 30th September. Three North Enders competed in the under 16s race. Rob Rogers was 2nd, Max Spedding 7th and Jack Hulme 9th. Craig Rogers also competed in the under 12s event finishing 5th.
Race report from Peter Spedding:
” 4 BNECC youth members took part in the Great Orme race in gruelling conditions yesterday, wind was gusting 35-40knots at Hilbre Island so I guess up around 50-60mph by the Rest and Be Thankful cafe where they finished – you could barely stand up in the wind.
Craig was brought down early on in his race but dusted himself down and spent the race chasing the leaders – real good effort.
Jack, Max and Rob were in the U16’s. Jack who was under the weather finished well (9th) having to chase for much of the race. Max was in the leading pack until last 150 yards uphill into the wind finished about 10 secs back 7th, Rob came close to the win sprinting head on into the wind the winner nipped past with yards to go. I felt proud watching them. Believe it was their first taste of closed roads racing through town.
Mark Donnelly did the main race and that looked as hard as it gets with rain and wind. Plenty of hard crashes by the looks of the tattered lycra and pink bikes.”
